What Makes This World Cup Different
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the 23rd edition of the tournament and the first to feature 48 teams. It is jointly hosted by 16 cities across three countries: 11 in the United States, 3 in Mexico, and 2 in Canada.
The tournament features an unprecedented schedule of 104 matches in total. The initial stage is composed of 12 groups of four teams, with every team playing three matches. The top two teams from each group, along with the eight best third-placed teams, advance to a new Round of 32.
That Round of 32 is brand new. In previous tournaments, the last-placed third-place teams went home. Now they get another shot. This has made the group stage far more interesting to track.
The knockout stage begins with the round of 32 on June 28 and culminates with the final on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. In the knockout stage, if scores are level after normal time, 30 minutes of extra time will be played.
Group Stage Results: What Has Happened So Far
Here is a quick snapshot from each group based on results through June 26, 2026.
Group A (Mexico, South Korea, Czechia, South Africa)
Mexico went unbeaten through the group with wins over South Africa (2-0), South Korea (1-0), and Czechia (3-0). South Africa’s win over South Korea helped them reach the knockout phase.
Group B (Switzerland, Canada, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Qatar)
Switzerland advanced as winners of Group B with a 3-1 win over Canada. Canada advanced as the runner-up with four points. Bosnia and Herzegovina also made it through as one of the top-eight third-place teams.
Group C (Brazil, Morocco, Scotland, Haiti)
Brazil and Morocco both ended group play with seven points, but Brazil advanced as group winners due to better goal difference. Brazil scored three goals against Scotland while conceding only one goal throughout the entire group stage. Scotland was eliminated after failing to score against Brazil.
Group D (USA, Turkiye, Paraguay, Australia)
Turkiye beat the USMNT 3-2 with a last-gasp winner from Kaan Ayhan in stoppage time, handing the US their first defeat of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Despite that loss, the USA’s fate for the round of 32 was already set after winning Group D. Their next match is against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Australia booked their place in the round of 32 after a controversial 0-0 draw with Paraguay.
Group E (Germany, Ivory Coast, Ecuador, Curaçao)
Germany won Group E but lost its final group-stage match to Ecuador in a result that had huge implications. Ecuador advanced to the round of 32 with the victory, putting them on top of the standings for teams that finished third in their groups. The Ivory Coast finished second after Nicolas Pépé scored twice to beat Curaçao.
Group F (Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, Tunisia)
The Netherlands topped Group F with a convincing 3-1 win over Tunisia. Japan finished second on five points and will play Brazil in the round of 32. Sweden also qualified after their draw against Japan.
Anthony Elanga’s curling strike claimed a 1-1 draw against Japan and was enough to guarantee Sweden’s progression, even though Elanga did not know it himself, slumping to the ground in disappointment at the final whistle before being told the news.
Group G (Belgium, Egypt, Iran, New Zealand)
Belgium won their group, while Egypt also advanced after strong performances through the group stage.
Group H (Spain, Uruguay, Cabo Verde, Saudi Arabia)
Spain won their group and Cabo Verde reached the knockout phase, while Uruguay crashed out of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Group I (France, Norway, Senegal, Iraq)
France and Senegal both reached the knockout phase, with France winning their group.

Golden Boot Race: Who Is Leading the Scoring Charts

This is easily the most exciting part of the World Cup 2026 tracker right now.
Lionel Messi continues to lead the Golden Boot standings as of June 26 with five goals. He has scored every single one of Argentina’s goals so far.
Messi became the highest World Cup scorer of all time with 18 goals after scoring five times in his first two games at this tournament. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner began with a hat-trick against Algeria and then a brace against Austria. That hat-trick against Algeria was his first-ever at a World Cup.
France’s Ousmane Dembélé, who won the Ballon d’Or as the top player in 2025, has scored four goals at this year’s World Cup after stringing together the second-fastest hat-trick in World Cup history, scoring all three goals in the first 32 minutes against Norway.
Vinicius Jr, Haaland, and Mbappe all sit on four goals, one behind Messi. Mbappe drew a blank against Norway, but provided two assists in the same game.
Erling Haaland has begun his debut FIFA World Cup with four goals. Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé and Brazilian star Vinícius Júnior are also proven goalscorers, as is teenage sensation Lamine Yamal.
Germany’s Deniz Undav has three goals, while Jonathan David of Canada is on the same mark after his hat-trick against Qatar. A further 20 players have scored twice so far, including Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal, Harry Kane of England, and Mikel Oyarzabal of Spain.
Here is a quick summary of the current Golden Boot leaderboard:
| Player | Country | Goals |
|---|---|---|
| Lionel Messi | Argentina | 5 |
| Ousmane Dembélé | France | 4 |
| Kylian Mbappé | France | 4 |
| Erling Haaland | Norway | 4 |
| Vinicius Jr. | Brazil | 4 |
| Deniz Undav | Germany | 3 |
| Jonathan David | Canada | 3 |
It took just 33 matches for a century of goals to be racked up in this edition, second only to 1954 in terms of pace. After Portugal’s 5-0 win over Uzbekistan, 139 goals had been scored across the first 45 games, the most in the group stages of a single edition of the finals, overtaking the 136 scored in 2014 in three fewer matches.
You can track the full live scoring charts directly at FIFA’s official standings and stats page.

Also keep an eye on the halftime show at the final. The final match will feature the first-ever Super Bowl-style halftime show in FIFA World Cup history, produced by Global Citizen and curated by Chris Martin of Coldplay, with Madonna, Shakira, and BTS set to perform.
